🌿 Not Far in Distance, But Deep in History

Hi everyone, it’s Mery.

This time, let’s take a short trip — not in walking distance from IT Park, but just a 15–25 minute drive away depending on traffic. There, in the busy heart of downtown Cebu, stands Magellan’s Cross — one of the most meaningful symbols in our country’s history.

At first glance, it looks like a small wooden cross under a stone pavilion. But once you pause... and breathe...

You realize

— this is the place where faith in the Philippines was first planted.

📜 A Cross That Marked a New Chapter

The year was 1521. Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, arrived in Cebu and planted a cross right after the baptism of Rajah Humabon, Queen Juana, and around 800 locals.

That moment — a simple act of faith and power — became the starting point of Christianity in the archipelago. Some say the original cross had healing powers. People chipped off pieces to keep as relics — believing they could cure illness or bring blessings.

To protect it, the Church later encased the cross in tindalo wood and placed it inside the octagonal kiosk we see today — built in 1834.

Above it?

A painted ceiling mural showing that sacred baptism scene.

It’s beautiful. It’s quiet. And it still makes people stop and pray.

🕯️ Rituals and Candles – Faith Lives On

Even now, locals and visitors come to offer colored candles, each one holding a wish:

  • ❤️ Red – Love

  • 💛 Yellow – Health

  • 💗 Pink – Happiness

  • 💚 Green – Success

Sometimes, the women selling candles will say a prayer and dance gently in front of the cross for you. It’s not just a tourist moment

— it’s a living, breathing piece of Filipino faith and tradition.

🚗 Getting There – Mery’s Local Travel Tip

📍 Location: Plaza Sugbo, beside Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, and across Cebu City Hall.🕰️ From Cebu IT Park, take a car or Grab — it’s only 6–8km, but traffic can make it 15–25 minutes.

🚘 Parking can be tricky, especially on weekends and holidays.

You can try parking in nearby commercial areas and walking 3–5 minutes.

🍔 Hungry after your visit?

There’s a McDonald’s nearby, as well as Jollibee, Chowking, and other local eateries.

🏛️ Don’t Stop at the Cross

The area around Magellan’s Cross is filled with historic Cebu landmarks.

If you have extra time, here’s where I recommend going:

  • Basilica del Santo Niño – The oldest Catholic church in the Philippines

  • 🏰 Fort San Pedro – An old triangular fortress by the sea

  • Plaza Independencia – A peaceful square with trees and monuments

  • 🎭 Heritage of Cebu Monument – Sculptures telling Cebu’s rich story

  • Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral – Quiet, calm, and perfect for reflection

This part of the city is like a museum without walls — just waiting to be walked and felt.

💬 Mery’s Last Thought

People often ask, “Is the cross there the real one from Magellan’s time?”

The truth is, no one knows.

But honestly? That’s not the most crucial part.

Because

When you stand there…

When you light a candle…

When you see strangers quietly whispering prayers…

You’ll know

— This cross is real, not because of its wood, but because of the faith it still carries.

Warmest, Mery 💕
